16 July 2014 Edit Extravaganza!!
Alright, this needs edited. I do things differently now. I'll keep my old manner of role-playing here for reference (or as a souvenir of my naivete).
Here, ladies and gents, is how I currently do this thang.
Universe of RPG: Whatever I want.
Character build: For stats, I use Mythic and Mongoose Traveller (2008). For magic use, telekinesis, etc., I create my own stat, like a Magical Ability stat and a mana system. I either make spells up or steal them from other RPGs and rename them. To describe my character, I use the FU descriptor. It's as plain and to-the-point as it gets.
Combat: Mythic RPG or Mongoose Traveller (2008), no question. These are indubitably the fastest and simplest combat systems I could find. Roll initiative. Attack. Did you hit? Roll damage, roll armor. Boom, done. Next.
Narrative: Mostly Mythic solo RPG engine as a random idea generator.
You might ask yourself "What's the difference between doing all this stuff when you could just write a story?" The difference is that a story is mostly predetermined, although it can develop and change. It already possesses some form before (and while) being written. With an RPG, there are many variables that come unexpected to the author. A character you love could die. Heroes might actually lose the epic final battle. Maybe Peach isn't in another castle after all. It's a game, put yourself in it!
BELOW ME IS THE OLD STUFF :D
To play a fantastic Mary Poppins space suit of an adventure, I use:
-Mongoose Traveller Core Rulebook (and the abridged one because, well, reading hurts sometimes.)
-Supplement 4: Central Supply Catalogue (a textual shopping mall of stuff.)
-Supplement 9: Campaign Guide (for random events, keeps the story spicy.)
-Mythic GM Emulator (this is what you NEED to play solo. An imaginary friend of sorts.)
-a 10-sided die, 2 6-sided die
All of these (except the dice) may be found as PDFs. Happy soaring.
However, if you want a fantasy-style RPG use:
-your imagination
-9Qs solo RPG engine
-FU solo RPG engine
-Mythic solo RPG engine
-make twists and turns appear when you need them so you are still kinda *role-playing* and not just *writing*
